Herringbone Wallpaper
Herringbone is the zigzag of a parquet floor or a tweed jacket, short slanted lines set in alternating rows. On a wall it brings a tailored texture that often reads almost as a plain from across the room, which makes it a calm, useful choice for a study, a hall or a bedroom.
It comes in several guises. Galerie's Loft 2 and The New Textures Book carry a beautifully realistic sisal weave effect, among the most popular herringbones we sell. Grandeco's Antiga offers a refined take with a gently textured finish, and Eijffinger's Gilded recreates the lustre of inlaid wood. For something woven in earnest, Arte's Marquesa combines paper and hessian in an elegant chevron weave.
Herringbone also turns up inside other patterns. Osborne & Little's Strand has a tweedy herringbone stripe, and GP & J Baker's Signature II repeats it in a stripe formation, a natural partner for that house's feature designs.
If you like the zigzag but want it sharper and bolder, see chevron wallpaper. Our Decorating Notes article The Pattern That Climbed the Walls tells the story of the pattern.
